Micah 6:8 Mission — Empowering Southwest Louisiana Communities
Building a Healthier, Safer, and More Resilient Southwest Louisiana
At Micah 6:8 Mission, we empower communities to thrive by combining environmental stewardship, disaster resilience, and social justice. From clean air and water to disaster preparedness and community health, we provide tools, education, and support families need to live safely and sustainably in Southwest Louisiana. Our programs help residents respond to environmental challenges, access essential resources, and strengthen neighborhood connections.

Help support local resilience!
We’re gathering input from residents across Southwest Louisiana and Central Acadiana to strengthen our community’s ability to respond to severe weather and environmental challenges. This quick survey takes only five minutes and ensures your voice is heard.
Our Vision: Resilient, Informed Communities
Our mission is to foster empowered communities where residents have access to essential resources, knowledge, and support systems. By working with families, neighborhoods, and local leaders, we aim to:
- Ensure access to food, toiletries, clean water, and other essential resources
- Educate community members on environmental health, climate resilience, and advocacy
- Strengthen community connections through educational programs and community events
- Support wellness and disaster preparedness through actionable initiatives
We believe resilient communities are built through collaboration, education, and direct action, ensuring lasting change for generations to come.
Our Programs & Initiatives
Community Resources
- Food & Toiletries Boxes: Available at our Community Lighthouse Outpost.
- Grocery Giveaways: Held every other month at the Village Coffeehouse in Sulphur, offering food and essentials to neighbors in need.
- The Outpost & Blessing Box: A sheltered area connected to The Commons, The Outpost provides relief from rain, cold, or excessive heat. It features a Blessing Box stocked with hygiene items, water, and non-perishable foods, plus outlets for phone and device charging—creating a safe, practical space for anyone in need.
Environmental Education & Action
- Hands On Sunday: Interactive programs for youth and families featuring small science projects, crafts, and hands-on activities focused on environmental stewardship, sustainability, and climate resilience.
- Community Voices Thursdays: Expert talks with scientists, attorneys, local leaders, and tribal representatives on environmental, legal, and cultural issues in Southwest Louisiana.
Health & Disaster Preparedness
Programs designed to help families navigate environmental, health, and social challenges caused by climate change, pollution, and extreme weather events.
Creation Care: Protecting Water, Land & Air
Water – Safeguarding Our Lifeblood
Water sustains ecosystems, fisheries, industries, and communities in Southwest Louisiana. Pollution, coastal erosion, and climate change threaten both the environment and local livelihoods.
- PFAS Testing & Salt Dome Monitoring: We conduct community-led water testing to identify PFAS contamination (“forever chemicals”) and monitor potential threats from the Sulphur Salt Dome to protect the Chicot Aquifer and public health.
Land & Biodiversity – Thriving Wetlands and Wildlife
Southwest Louisiana’s wetlands, bayous, prairies, and coastal marshes provide habitat for wildlife, filter water, absorb floods, and protect communities. Biodiversity is essential for climate resilience and food security.
- The Commons & Community Garden: Our developing community space now features a pond, compost bin, rainwater catchment, insect hotel, solar panels, and a community garden to support both people and the environment.
- Blessing Box & Murals: Special thanks to student artists from Sulphur High School for painting murals that brighten The Outpost, bringing our mission and community spirit to life.
Air – Ensuring Clean Air for Healthy Communities
We monitor refinery flaring and local air quality using cutting-edge technology in partnership with CreateLab. Community education programs teach residents about pollution risks and empower action for cleaner air.
Our History
Founded by Elder Cynthia Robertson, MSW, Micah 6:8 Mission began in Portie Town, Sulphur, Louisiana, in 2018 with a simple food box. The impacts of Hurricanes Laura & Delta and Winter Storm Uri expanded the mission into environmental stewardship, disaster preparedness, and social justice.
Key milestones:
- Launch of the Community Garden and The Outpost Blessing Box
- Initiation of Community Voices meetings
- Partnership with the Disaster Justice Network for equitable disaster recovery
- Independent water, land, and air monitoring initiatives to protect public health
Micah 6:8
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?
In the bible, ”justice,” like love, is an action word. Justice means to “make right”.
We are not faith based, but are faith inspired.
We like the translation that says, “love mercy”, but the meaning is more than what we usually think of as mercy. It is forgiveness, understanding, and again, is an action word – extending forgiveness, understanding and kindness.
“Walking humbly” is the part of the verse that leads us to be relationship makers and not charity givers, to let the community lead the acts of mercy, and share in them.
The descriptors of justice, mercy and humbleness led us to understand that:
- We are called to do justice in the world.
- We are called to humbly walk with the members of our community.
- We are called to share what we have with others.
We treat the symptoms of the problems of our world in many ways. In our beginning, this work involved the Blessing Box and filtered water station. Now, we are working with the community to educate about the environmental and social issues facing us, and the ways we can make changes to resolve those issues.
Living in Louisiana, we know climate change and environmental issues have had, do have, and will have such a huge impact on the people we are called to serve – the homeless, the working poor, the elderly, the disabled. And if we don’t begin to address these issues, we are spitting in the wind. If we leave out the ‘do justice’ instruction, we and our successors will continue to apply salve to the wounds again and again. We work to heal the systemic wounds of environmental, economic, social, and racial injustice in our communities.
