About Micah 6:8 Mission

Micah 6:8 Mission works to strengthen Southwest Louisiana through community engagement, environmental stewardship, education, advocacy, direct service, and resilience-building. Our work includes community events, environmental health education, sustainability projects, neighborhood leadership development, mutual aid, and public education around the issues affecting our region.

Position Summary

Micah 6:8 Mission is seeking a part-time Community Engagement & Communications Assistant to help support outreach, events, storytelling, social media, and community programs.

This position is ideal for a college student, recent graduate, or community member interested in communications, environmental justice, nonprofit work, sustainability, public health, community service, or local advocacy. No prior nonprofit experience is required. We are looking for someone who is dependable, willing to learn, comfortable with people, and interested in making a positive impact in Southwest Louisiana.

The person in this role will help document Micah’s work, support public events, assist with outreach, gather stories and photos, and help communicate the impact of Micah’s programs. This is a support position; final approval of public messaging, sensitive issue framing, and official communications will remain with the Communications Manager and Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Assist with community outreach and engagement activities.
  • Help share information about Micah programs, events, resources, and opportunities.
  • Support staff during community events, workshops, public meetings, and outreach activities.
  • Help welcome participants, collect sign-in information, distribute materials, and support event flow.
  • Assist with follow-up after events, including thank-you messages, participant notes, and basic documentation.
  • Work respectfully with diverse community members, volunteers, partners, and program participants.

Communications and Storytelling

  • Assist with interviews, community spotlights, participant stories, and program documentation.
  • Take photos and short videos at approved events and programs.
  • Help organize photos, stories, quotes, and program highlights for future use.
  • Draft basic social media captions, short updates, or newsletter items for review.
  • Help document community impact in ways that are respectful, accurate, and dignity-centered.
  • Support the Communications Manager with content gathering, scheduling, and routine communications tasks.

Event and Program Support

  • Assist with setup, check-in, documentation, and breakdown for events as needed.
  • Help staff capture event outcomes, attendance, stories, and photos.
  • Support Hands On Sundays, Community Voices, Community Connections, The Commons activities, and other Micah programs as assigned.
  • Help identify useful stories, visuals, and community feedback from events and programs.

Administrative and Organizational Support

  • Help maintain organized records of photos, stories, sign-in sheets, outreach materials, and event notes.
  • Upload or save communications materials in Micah’s shared filing system as directed.
  • Track assigned hours and submit simple weekly time records.
  • Communicate promptly with supervisors about schedule changes, assigned tasks, or barriers to completing work.

Qualifications

  • Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Dependable, professional, and community-minded.
  • Comfortable working with diverse groups of people.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Interest in communications, environmental issues, public service, nonprofit work, public health, sustainability, or community engagement.
  • Ability to take direction, ask questions, and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Willingness to learn Micah’s mission, programs, and communication style.
  • Ability to attend scheduled events reliably and communicate in advance if a conflict arises.

Preferred, But Not Required

  • Experience taking photos or short videos for social media.
  • Experience with Canva, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or basic design tools.
  • Experience volunteering, organizing, or working with community groups.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus but not required.

Expectations

  • Because this role supports community events and public-facing work, reliability is essential. The Community Engagement & Communications Assistant is expected to attend scheduled shifts and events, communicate promptly if conflicts arise, and represent Micah 6:8 Mission professionally and respectfully.
  • Failure to report for an assigned event or work responsibility without prior notice may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on, real-world communications and nonprofit experience.
  • Experience in community engagement, storytelling, outreach, and event support.
  • Exposure to environmental justice, sustainability, public health, and community resilience work.
  • Professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Resume-building experience for future jobs, internships, or graduate programs.
  • The opportunity to contribute to meaningful work in Southwest Louisiana.
